As I grew older, various people began questioning why I still watched 'Cartoons'. The simple answer is that, while 'Anime' is short for Animation, Anime != Cartoon. At least not in the typical American sense of the word. Yes, they have some common ground: their both fantasy and they are both animated, but that is it. While it is true that a good amount of anime has been designed for children and preteens, the vast majority is aimed at teens 17+ and adults from 20-35 and up.
In fact, if you are a skeptic, watch the series 'DeathNote', then if you can still honestly tell me that you feel it's at a child's level, I will admit defeat...but it won't stop me from still loving it!
In my opinion, anime series are often based on much deeper ideas and concepts, have better story boards, better dialogue in most cases, etc than most of the live action tv shows I've ever seen. The beauty is, voice actors, artists and production all cost far less than the average live action tv show...but yet, often will profit in the hundreds of millions.
